How an after-hours return works

Confirm the arrangement before your rental day, because it varies by company and location:

• You are given a specific return car park or set of bays — at airports this is usually the normal rental return area; off-airport it may be the branch's own yard.
• You lock the car, then drop the keys into a sealed key box, sometimes with a return slip filled in.
• Staff check the car in the next morning and email you the final invoice.
• Your contract end time still applies — leaving the keys at 02:00 for a 09:00 contract does not shorten the rental, but returning after your contracted time can trigger an extra day.

The risk: you are not there for the inspection

With a staffed return, damage is agreed (or disputed) face to face. With an after-hours drop, the first inspection happens without you, and any charge lands by email days later against the excess or deposit already on your card. You cannot prove the car was fine unless you documented it.

Step by step at drop-off

1. Park exactly where the instructions say. A car found in the wrong place can be logged as a late or non-return.
2. Film a slow walk-around in good light (use your phone torch if needed), then take stills of any marks.
3. Photograph the odometer, the fuel gauge, and the interior.
4. Photograph the car in its bay with any location signage or bay number visible.
5. Fill in the return slip if provided; photograph it before it goes in the box.
6. Post the keys, photograph the closed key box, and note the time.
7. Keep everything until the final invoice arrives and is correct.

Fuel, tolls, and keys

• Fuel: for a full-to-full rental, fill up near the drop-off and keep the timestamped receipt; without staff present you cannot argue the level later.
• Tolls: electronic toll charges from your last drive may still be in transit and can appear on the final invoice days afterwards — that is normal, not an error. See toll roads for rental cars.
• Keys: only ever use the official key box. Never leave keys in the car, on a tyre, or with a stranger.
• If there is a second key, return both; a missing key is an expensive charge.

When to avoid an after-hours return

• High-value or premium cars, where a disputed scratch is costly.
• Small off-airport suppliers with a reputation for post-rental damage claims — a staffed return with a signed “no damage” sheet is worth planning your day around.
• Any time you can instead return during opening hours for only a small extra cost or a slightly earlier start.
