What Happens if Your Flight Is Late for Car Rental Pickup?
Airport rental desks usually track your flight and hold the car. Off-airport branches with fixed hours are where a late arrival can actually cost you the booking.

Will they hold the car?
Most major companies ask for your flight number precisely so they can check arrivals. A delayed inbound flight is the routine case, not an emergency, and the car is normally still there when you reach the desk. Where you can run into trouble is a very long delay that pushes you past the desk's own closing time, or a booking where you never provided a flight number.
Airport bookings vs off-airport
- In-terminal desks at LIS, OPO and FAO keep long hours (often to around midnight or 01:00) and flight-track. A delay of an hour or two is a non-issue.
- Off-airport / shuttle branches around Prior Velho (Lisbon), Perafita (Porto) or near Faro often have firm opening hours and smaller teams. If the shuttle stops running or the branch closes, there may be no one to hand you a car until the morning.
- A "meet and greet" booking depends on a person coming to meet you — always call the number on the voucher if you are late.
What to do while you are still delayed
- As soon as a delay is confirmed, message or call the rental company with your booking reference and new arrival time.
- Check the branch's closing time on your voucher against your revised landing time.
- If you will miss the closing time, ask directly: can they wait, leave the car for a later collection, or move the pickup to tomorrow morning with no penalty?
- Keep screenshots of the flight delay and of any message you send — useful if you later dispute a no-show charge.
If the desk is closed when you land
First, check whether another desk from the same company or its partner brands is still open — at airports, several brands often share a counter. If nothing is open, contact the company's after-hours or customer line, arrange a morning pickup, and keep your delay evidence. You may need a taxi or one hotel night in the meantime; keep those receipts, as some travel insurance policies cover missed-connection-type costs caused by the airline's delay.
Booking to reduce the risk
- Always enter your flight number on the reservation.
- For late-evening arrivals, prefer an in-terminal desk over an off-airport branch, even at a slightly higher price.
- Check the branch's stated hours before booking and compare them with your scheduled landing time plus a couple of hours' buffer.
- Favour companies with 24-hour phone support for anything landing after 22:00.
