Faro International Airport (FAO) is the main air gateway to the Algarve and one of the most practical places to collect a rental car in southern Portugal. This guide covers where rental companies are located, how pickup works, what to expect when leaving the airport, and when renting here makes sense.

Inside-terminal and on-airport rental companies

Faro Airport's main car rental service desks are located within the terminal's public Arrivals area. After leaving baggage reclaim, travelers using an airport-based rental company can complete the paperwork inside the terminal before walking to the nearby vehicle collection area.

Unlike airports where most rental facilities require a shuttle transfer, Faro's main airport rental setup is relatively compact. For companies based within the official airport rental area, the vehicle collection point is generally within walking distance.

Faro has a substantial group of rental companies operating outside the main terminal rental setup. Depending on the provider, customers may walk to a designated meeting point around Car Park 4 (P4) or use a complimentary shuttle to a nearby rental branch.

Common pickup areas

Off-terminal bookings at Faro generally use one of two arrangements:

• Car Park 4 (P4): Follow the Rent-a-Car signage and pedestrian route toward the rental area. Some local providers use P4 as their meeting or collection point.
• Kiss & Fly / shuttle zone: Some off-airport providers collect customers outside the terminal and transfer them to a nearby branch.

Faro Airport is relatively compact, but the exact process depends on whether your provider uses an inside-terminal desk, a P4 meeting point, or an off-airport branch.

Leaving Faro Airport by car

Faro Airport is considerably easier to leave by car than many large urban airports. The access roads quickly lead toward Faro city, the N125, and the main motorway network serving the Algarve.

Shortly after leaving the airport area, drivers reach the main road junction that divides traffic toward Faro, the N125, and the wider Algarve.

N125 or A22?

The N125 runs through many Algarve communities and can be useful for shorter local journeys, but it is generally slower and more stop-and-go. The A22 provides the faster east–west route across much of the Algarve and is often the simpler choice for longer distances.

What to know about Algarve toll roads

The A22 is the main motorway crossing the Algarve and an important route for many travelers leaving Faro Airport.

Under the current road setup reflected in this guide, the A22 no longer charges the electronic tolls that once made toll planning a major concern for Algarve-only trips.

Travelers continuing beyond the Algarve may still encounter toll roads elsewhere in Portugal, so it remains useful to understand whether the rental vehicle has a Via Verde transponder and how the rental company bills toll use.

• Ask whether the car includes or offers a Via Verde device.
• Confirm any administration or activation fees.
• Ask how toll charges outside the Algarve will be billed.
• Do not assume all Portuguese motorways use the same payment setup.

Returning a rental car to Faro Airport

For airport-based rental companies, follow the airport signs toward the appropriate Rent-a-Car or P4 return area rather than entering ordinary public parking.

If you rented from an off-airport provider, you will generally return the vehicle directly to that company's depot and use its shuttle service back to the terminal.

• Allow extra time for fuel and the vehicle inspection.
• For off-airport rentals, include shuttle transfer time in your plans.
• Keep your provider's return location saved in your navigation app.
• A fuel station near the airport is useful for final refueling before return.

When renting at Faro Airport makes sense

Faro is one of the Portuguese airports where collecting a car immediately often fits naturally with the type of trip visitors are planning.

When renting at Faro Airport may not make sense

Despite Faro being a particularly car-friendly airport for regional travel, not every Algarve trip requires a rental.

• One-town stays: If your accommodation is central and most of the trip will be spent in one walkable destination, a car may add little value.
• Rail-focused trips: Travelers continuing mainly between Faro, Lisbon, and Porto may find train travel easier than dealing with a car in larger cities.
• Short solo or couple trips: If you pack lightly and plan only a few local excursions, taxis or rideshare may be simpler.
