Porto Airport (OPO) is a convenient starting point for road trips through northern Portugal. This guide covers where rental companies are located, how pickup works, what to expect when leaving the airport, and when renting here makes sense.
Inside-terminal and on-airport rental companies
Rental desks for the airport's on-site agencies are located on Level 0 of the main terminal, in the Arrivals hall. Although the service counters are inside the terminal, the vehicles themselves are normally located roughly 200 to 500 meters away in dedicated rental compounds. A complimentary shuttle operates between the terminal and the vehicle pickup areas.

Off-airport rental providers and shuttles
Many lower-cost and regional rental companies operate from facilities in and around Perafita, approximately 1.5 to 3 kilometers from the airport terminal. These companies generally provide their own shuttle service from the Arrivals area.

Finding your shuttle
- Exit through the main Arrivals doors.
- Look for the designated middle island, second lane, or provider-specific pickup zone.
- Some companies run continuous loops while others may require you to call for pickup.
- The drive to most nearby rental facilities is only a few minutes once the shuttle departs.
How car rental pickup usually works at Porto Airport
Complete the rental paperwork
After entering the Arrivals hall, proceed to your rental company's desk or follow the instructions supplied by an off-airport provider. Have your driving license, passport or other accepted identification, booking information, and the payment card the company requires.
Take the rental shuttle
For companies using separate vehicle compounds, leave the terminal and locate the appropriate rental shuttle. The transfer is generally very short. Off-airport companies may use a different pickup area from the main airport rental shuttle, so follow the instructions on your voucher.
Inspect the vehicle before leaving
Compare the vehicle against the condition or damage report supplied by the rental company. Photograph or record any existing scratches, dents, wheel damage, or interior damage, and report anything missing from the paperwork before leaving the rental facility.
Leaving Porto Airport by car
Porto Airport connects very quickly with the region's motorway network. Once you leave the rental compound, signs direct traffic toward Porto and the surrounding highways.

When renting at Porto Airport makes sense
Douro Valley and northern Portugal
A rental car adds substantial flexibility for the Douro Valley, Peneda-Gerês, Braga, Guimarães, and smaller rural towns.
You are leaving Porto immediately
Airport pickup lets you avoid driving through central Porto before a road trip.
You have significant luggage
Travelers with heavy luggage or family equipment may value having a vehicle from arrival.
Your accommodation includes parking
Guaranteed parking removes one of the biggest downsides of keeping a car while staying in Porto.
You want remote beaches and smaller destinations
A car makes it easier to reach places that would otherwise need slower regional bus or rail connections.
When renting at Porto Airport may not make sense
Travelers staying primarily in central Porto may find a rental car more inconvenient than useful.
- City-only stays: Central Porto has narrow streets, pedestrian areas, difficult parking, and a strong public transport network.
- Budget-focused trips: Metro Line E connects Porto Airport with the city and can eliminate rental, fuel, toll, and parking expenses.
- Short solo visits: Public transport and rideshare may be simpler than maintaining a vehicle for a brief urban stay.
