Lisbon Airport (LIS) can be a convenient place to begin a Portugal road trip, but renting immediately is not the best choice for every traveler. This guide covers where rental companies are located, how pickup works, what to expect when leaving the airport, and when it may make more sense to wait before collecting a car.
Inside-terminal and on-airport rental companies
The main car rental desks at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport are located in the Terminal 1 Arrivals hall. After clearing customs and entering the public arrivals area, follow signs for “Aluguer de Viaturas” or “Car Rental.”
Terminal 2 is used for departures by certain airlines, while arriving passengers are processed through Terminal 1. This makes Terminal 1 the main starting point for airport car rental pickup.

Off-airport rental providers and shuttles
Lisbon has a substantial group of off-airport rental providers operating from Prior Velho and nearby business areas. These facilities are generally around 1.5 to 3 kilometers from the terminal, with typical transfers taking roughly 5 to 10 minutes once the shuttle departs.
Most of these companies provide complimentary transport between Terminal 1 and the rental branch, although the exact pickup procedure varies by provider.
Common shuttle meeting area
Many off-site providers direct arriving customers toward Exit 4 of Terminal 1. From the Arrivals hall, travelers are commonly instructed to head toward the Vodafone shop, leave through Exit 4, and cross toward the designated shuttle or meeting area.

Finding your shuttle
- Collect your luggage and enter the Terminal 1 Arrivals hall.
- Follow your provider's instructions toward Exit 4.
- Cross toward the designated rental shuttle or meeting area.

- Some companies run frequent loops, while others may ask you to call after arrival.
How car rental pickup usually works at Lisbon Airport
The process differs significantly depending on whether your provider has a Terminal 1 desk or operates from an off-airport branch.
Find your rental desk or shuttle instructions
For terminal-based companies, follow the car rental signage inside the Terminal 1 Arrivals hall. For an off-airport provider, follow the meeting-point instructions supplied with your reservation.
Complete the rental paperwork
Travelers should normally have their driving license, passport or other accepted identification, booking information, and the payment card required by the rental company.
Deposit and payment rules vary substantially between rental companies, so confirm the provider's requirements before traveling.
Collect the vehicle
Customers using terminal-based rental companies are generally directed toward the airport's nearby rental parking facilities, commonly around P1 and, depending on the provider, other designated collection areas.
Customers using an off-airport agency will instead take the provider's shuttle to a nearby branch, often in Prior Velho, and collect the vehicle there.
Inspect the vehicle before leaving
Compare the car against the condition report supplied by the rental company. Photograph or record any existing scratches, dents, wheel damage, interior damage, or other discrepancies before driving away.
Leaving Lisbon Airport by car
Lisbon Airport sits directly beside one of the city's busiest road networks. The benefit is quick access to major routes; the tradeoff is that drivers need to choose lanes and directions relatively quickly after leaving the rental area.
Airport exits and the surrounding road network
After leaving the rental parking area, airport traffic feeds toward the surrounding access roads and the Rotunda do Relógio area. Signs divide traffic toward central Lisbon and the main routes leading north, south, and east.

The surrounding road system includes the Segunda Circular, one of Lisbon's major urban arteries. Traffic can become heavy during commuting periods, and lane changes can arrive quickly.
Understanding tolls before leaving Lisbon Airport
Travelers beginning a longer road trip from Lisbon may encounter both conventional motorway tolls and roads using electronic toll collection.
Many rental companies offer a Via Verde transponder that records toll use electronically and bills charges according to the rental company's system.
- Ask whether your rental includes or offers a Via Verde device.
- Confirm any activation, administration, or daily fees.
- Ask how toll charges will appear after the rental.
- Do not assume every motorway uses the same payment method.
Returning a rental car to Lisbon Airport
For on-airport companies, follow airport signs for Car Rental, the appropriate parking facility, or your provider's return area rather than entering ordinary public parking.
Off-airport providers usually require the vehicle to be returned to their own nearby facility. The company then provides transport back to the airport terminal.

When renting at Lisbon Airport makes sense
You are leaving Lisbon immediately
Airport pickup works well if you plan to leave the metropolitan area soon after arrival instead of spending several days sightseeing in central Lisbon.
You are heading into the countryside
A rental car provides much greater flexibility for itineraries involving Alentejo, the Algarve, rural areas, and smaller destinations that are less convenient by public transport.
You are visiting smaller towns
Destinations such as Óbidos, Nazaré, and Tomar fit naturally into a road-trip itinerary, particularly when combining several stops in one journey.
You are traveling with children or lots of luggage
Airport pickup can simplify arrival for families or travelers carrying strollers, multiple suitcases, child equipment, or other bulky gear.
When renting at Lisbon Airport may not make sense
Lisbon is one of the clearest examples of a destination where having a car and needing a car are not the same thing. If the first part of your trip is concentrated in the historic center, collecting a vehicle immediately can create unnecessary cost and inconvenience.
- Several days in central Lisbon: Parking can be difficult and expensive, while many major sights are easier to reach on foot or by public transport.
- Traveling onward to Porto: Rail may be a better fit for travelers whose next major stop is Porto and who do not need a vehicle between the two cities.
- Short budget-focused visits: Metro, taxi, and rideshare services may cost substantially less than keeping a rental car parked for most of the trip.
